어떤 지도든 맞닿은 나라끼리 색이 겹치지 않게 칠하는 데 네 가지 색이면 충분해요. 1852년에 처음 나온 질문인데 1976년 아펠과 하켄이 컴퓨터로 수많은 경우를 확인해 증명했어요. 컴퓨터에 크게 기댄 첫 유명 증명이라 당시 논란도 있었어요.

The four color theorem · Any map can be colored with just four colors
Any map can be colored so that neighboring countries never share a color, using only four colors. The question was first asked in 1852 and proved in 1976 by Appel and Haken, who checked huge numbers of cases by computer. As the first famous proof leaning heavily on a computer, it stirred debate at the time.
