배차 10분 버스를 평균 5분보다 오래 기다리는 이유

버스가 평균 10분마다 와도 간격이 들쭉날쭉하면 평균 대기 시간은 5분보다 길어져요. 아무 때나 정류장에 가면 짧은 간격보다 긴 간격 사이에 도착할 가능성이 크기 때문이에요. 이렇게 고르는 순간 큰 쪽이 더 잘 걸리는 걸 '검사 역설'이라고 해요.

The inspection paradox · Why you wait longer than half the bus interval
Even if buses come every 10 minutes on average, uneven gaps make the average wait longer than 5 minutes. Arrive at a random time and you're more likely to land in a long gap than a short one. This bias toward larger intervals is called the inspection paradox.
