기댓값이 무한대인 게임에 얼마를 낼까
상트페테르부르크의 역설
앞면이 나올 때까지 동전을 던지고, 늦게 나올수록 상금이 두 배씩 커지는 게임이에요. 계산하면 기댓값이 무한대인데, 막상 큰돈 내고 하겠다는 사람은 없어요. 1738년 다니엘 베르누이가 돈의 만족감은 금액만큼 커지지 않는다는 생각으로 풀이를 내놨어요.

Flip a coin until heads, and the prize doubles with every tail. The expected payout works out to infinity, yet no one would pay much to play. In 1738 Daniel Bernoulli explained it by arguing that the satisfaction from money doesn't grow as fast as the amount.
