페인트로 채울 순 있는데 겉은 못 칠하는 나팔

1/x 곡선을 돌려 만든 끝없이 긴 나팔은 부피는 유한한데 겉넓이는 무한대예요. 그래서 '안을 페인트로 채울 순 있지만 겉을 칠할 페인트는 모자란다'는 농담이 있어요. 1640년대 이탈리아 수학자 토리첼리가 처음 계산해 당시 큰 화제가 됐어요.

Spin the curve 1/x around an axis and you get an endless horn with finite volume but infinite surface area. Hence the joke that you could fill it with paint but never have enough to paint it. Italian mathematician Torricelli worked this out in the 1640s, to much amazement.
