The coastline paradox · Coastlines get longer the shorter your ruler

Measure a jagged coastline with a shorter ruler and you capture more nooks, so the length keeps growing. That's why countries' official coastline figures can differ wildly. British scientist Lewis Fry Richardson noticed it, and Benoit Mandelbrot's 1967 paper 'How Long Is the Coast of Britain?' launched the study of fractals.
