돌려 말한 말도 시간이 지나면 또 바뀌는 이유
완곡어 쳇바퀴
듣기 거북한 말을 부드러운 말로 바꿔도, 시간이 지나면 새 말에도 같은 느낌이 묻어서 또 다른 말로 바꾸게 돼요. '변소'가 '화장실'로 바뀌고 다시 '레스트룸' 같은 말이 쓰이는 식이에요. 1994년 언어학자 핑커가 '완곡어 쳇바퀴'라는 이름으로 널리 알렸어요.

Swap a harsh word for a gentle one, and over time the new word picks up the same feeling, so it gets replaced again. Korean went from 'byeonso' to 'hwajangsil' for toilet, and now 'restroom' shows up too. Linguist Steven Pinker popularized the term in 1994.
