옛날엔 '어리다'가 '어리석다'였어요
뜻이 바뀐 말
말의 뜻은 시간이 지나면서 바뀌어요. 훈민정음 언해에 나오는 '어린 백성'은 나이 어린 백성이 아니라 '어리석은 백성'이고, '어엿비 너겨'는 '예쁘게 여겨'가 아니라 '불쌍히 여겨'라는 뜻이었어요. 지금 '어리다'는 나이가 적다는 뜻, '어여쁘다'는 예쁘다는 뜻으로 바뀌었어요.

Semantic change · 'Eorida' once meant foolish, not young
Word meanings drift over time. In the 15th-century Korean explanation of Hunminjeongeum, 'eorin baekseong' meant foolish people, not young ones, and 'eoyeotbi' meant pitifully, not prettily. Today 'eorida' means young and 'eoyeoppeuda' means pretty.
