말의 유래를 그럴듯한 이야기로 지어내 믿게 되는 걸 민간어원이라고 해요. 행주산성에서 아낙네들이 치마에 돌을 날라 '행주치마'가 됐다는 이야기가 대표적인데, 이 말은 행주대첩보다 앞선 16세기 초 책에 이미 나와요. 말에 딱 맞는 사연이 있으면 사람들은 쉽게 믿어요.

Folk etymology · The Korean apron wasn't named after a famous battle
Folk etymology is a made-up but plausible story about a word's origin. A famous Korean one says the haengju apron is named after women carrying stones in their skirts at the 1593 Battle of Haengju, but the word appears in a book from the early 1500s. A good story is easy to believe.
