대화에서 한 사람이 말을 마치고 다음 사람이 말을 시작하기까지 걸리는 시간은 대체로 0.2초 안팎이에요. 2009년 여러 언어를 비교한 연구에서 나라마다 조금씩 달랐지만 모두 아주 짧았어요. 말을 시작하는 데는 그보다 오래 걸리니, 상대 말이 끝나기 전부터 대답을 준비하고 있는 셈이에요.

The pause between one person finishing and the next starting is usually around 0.2 seconds. A 2009 study comparing languages found small differences, but all were very short. Since planning speech takes longer than that, we start preparing replies before the other person finishes.
