신호가 자동으로 바뀌게 된 뒤에도 횡단보도 버튼이 떼어지지 않고 남아 있는 곳이 많아요. 2004년 《뉴욕타임스》는 뉴욕시 보행자 버튼 3,250개 중 2,500개 넘게 사실상 작동하지 않는다고 보도했어요. 그래도 누르면 뭔가 하고 있다는 느낌 덕에 기다림이 덜 답답하게 느껴진다는 말이 있어요.

After signals switched to automatic timers, many crosswalk buttons were simply left in place. In 2004 The New York Times reported that more than 2,500 of New York City's 3,250 walk buttons did essentially nothing. Still, pressing one may make the wait feel less frustrating.
