도로를 넓혀도 금방 다시 막히는 이유

길을 넓히면 잠깐 덜 막히지만, 편해진 만큼 차를 끌고 나오는 사람이 늘어 금세 다시 막혀요. 2011년 미국 경제학자 듀랜턴과 터너는 도로를 늘린 만큼 차가 달린 거리도 거의 그대로 늘었다는 연구를 냈어요. 그래서 도로 확장만으로는 정체를 풀기 어렵다는 말이 나와요.

A wider road flows better for a while, but easier driving brings more cars and the jams return. In 2011 economists Gilles Duranton and Matthew Turner found driving rose almost one-for-one with new road capacity. That's why widening alone rarely solves congestion.
