옆 차선이 더 빨라 보이는 이유
막히는 길에선 빨리 갈 때 차 간격이 벌어지고 느릴 때 촘촘해져서, 나를 앞질러 가는 차를 보는 시간이 내가 추월하는 차를 보는 시간보다 길어요. 1999년 레델마이어와 팁시라니는 이 때문에 평균 속도가 같아도 옆 차선이 더 빨라 보인다고 《네이처》에 발표했어요. 느린 줄엔 차가 더 많으니 실제로 옆이 빠를 때가 많다는 반론도 있어요.

Why the next lane seems faster · Switch lanes and your old lane speeds up
In heavy traffic, cars spread out when moving and bunch up when slow, so you spend more time watching cars pass you than cars you pass. In 1999 Redelmeier and Tibshirani reported in Nature that the next lane looks faster even at the same average speed. Others argue slow lanes hold more cars, so the other lane often really is faster.
