낡은 동네에 예술가와 작은 가게들이 모여 분위기가 살면, 사람이 몰리고 임대료가 올라 정작 원래 있던 주민과 가게가 떠나게 돼요. 1964년 영국 사회학자 루스 글래스가 런던의 변화를 보고 이름을 붙였어요. 경리단길이나 성수동 이야기에 자주 나와요.

Gentrification · Why original shops get pushed out of trendy neighborhoods
When artists and small shops make a run-down area lively, crowds and rents rise until the original residents and businesses have to leave. British sociologist Ruth Glass named it in 1964 after watching London change. In Korea it often comes up with neighborhoods like Seongsu-dong.
