Gresham's law · Bad money drives out good

When coins with less gold circulate at the same value as full ones, people hoard the good coins and spend the bad, so only bad money circulates. It's named after 16th-century English financier Thomas Gresham; economist Henry Macleod coined the name in 1858. Old coins worth more as metal than face value disappear for the same reason.
