1938년 오슨 웰스가 화성인 침공을 뉴스처럼 꾸민 라디오 드라마를 방송하자 미국 전역이 혼란에 빠졌다고 알려져 있어요. 하지만 당시 이 방송을 들은 사람 자체가 적었고, 큰 소동은 신문들이 부풀린 거라는 게 요즘 연구자들의 평가예요. 라디오를 견제하던 신문이 과장했다는 설명이에요.

In 1938 Orson Welles aired a radio drama staged as news of a Martian invasion, and the story goes that the country panicked. Modern researchers say few people were even listening and newspapers blew the panic out of proportion. Papers competing with radio had reason to exaggerate.
