냄새 때문에 하수도가 생긴 도시
런던 대악취
1858년 여름 무더위에 하수가 그대로 흘러들던 템스강 냄새가 너무 심해 '대악취'라고 불렸어요. 강가 국회의사당까지 냄새가 들어오자 그제야 의원들이 하수도 공사에 큰돈을 쓰기로 했어요. 기술자 조지프 배절제트가 만든 하수도는 콜레라를 줄였고 지금도 일부를 써요.

The Great Stink · The smell that gave London its sewers
In the hot summer of 1858, the Thames, full of raw sewage, smelled so bad it was called the Great Stink. Once it reached Parliament on the riverbank, lawmakers finally funded a sewer system. Engineer Joseph Bazalgette's sewers cut cholera, and parts are still in use.
