도시가 시골보다 밤에 더 더운 이유
열섬 현상
아스팔트와 콘크리트는 낮에 받은 열을 품고 있다가 밤에 내놓고, 에어컨과 차가 내뿜는 열도 더해져서 도시가 주변보다 더워요. 특히 밤에 차이가 커서 열대야도 도시에 더 잦아요. 19세기 초 영국 기상학자 루크 하워드가 런던과 교외의 온도 차를 기록한 게 첫 관찰로 꼽혀요.

Asphalt and concrete soak up heat by day and release it at night, and air conditioners and cars add more, so cities run warmer than their surroundings. The gap is biggest at night, so tropical nights come more often in cities. English meteorologist Luke Howard's early-1800s records of London versus its outskirts are counted as the first observation.
