눈송이는 왜 모두 육각형일까
육각형 눈 결정
물 분자가 얼 때 육각형 모양으로 자리를 잡아서 눈 결정도 여섯 갈래로 자라요. 떨어지면서 지나는 온도와 습도에 따라 판 모양, 나뭇가지 모양 등으로 달라져요. 일본 물리학자 나카야 우키치로는 '눈은 하늘에서 보낸 편지'라고 했어요.

Water molecules lock into a hexagonal pattern when they freeze, so snow crystals grow six arms. The temperature and humidity they fall through shape them into plates, branches, and more. Japanese physicist Ukichiro Nakaya called snowflakes 'letters sent from the sky'.
