엘니뇨
적도 태평양 동쪽 바닷물이 평소보다 몇 년에 한 번씩 따뜻해지는 현상이에요. 스페인어로 '남자아이'라는 뜻으로, 크리스마스 무렵 나타나 붙은 이름이에요. 반대로 차가워지는 건 '라니냐'라고 하고, 둘 다 세계 날씨를 흔들어요.

Every few years the eastern equatorial Pacific gets warmer than usual. The name is Spanish for 'the boy', since it tends to appear around Christmas. The cool opposite is La Niña, and both shake up weather worldwide.
