마른 땅에 비가 내릴 때 나는 냄새를 '페트리코'라고 불러요. 흙 속 세균이 만드는 '지오스민'이라는 성분이 빗방울에 튀어 공기 중으로 퍼지는 게 큰 몫을 해요. 사람 코는 지오스민을 아주 적은 양만 있어도 알아챌 만큼 예민해요.

The smell of rain on dry earth is called petrichor. A big part of it is geosmin, a compound made by soil bacteria, which raindrops kick up into the air. The human nose can detect geosmin in incredibly tiny amounts.
