골프공 표면은 왜 울퉁불퉁할까
골프공 딤플
매끈한 공은 뒤쪽에 큰 공기 소용돌이가 생겨서 공을 뒤로 잡아끌어요. 오목한 홈이 공 표면에 얇은 난류를 만들면 공기가 공을 더 오래 감싸고 흘러 뒤쪽 소용돌이가 작아져요. 그래서 같은 힘으로 쳐도 매끈한 공보다 훨씬 멀리 날아가요.

A smooth ball leaves a big wake of swirling air that drags it back. Dimples create a thin layer of turbulence that helps air hug the ball longer, shrinking the wake. So a dimpled ball flies much farther than a smooth one hit just as hard.
