The Kuleshov effect · Why the same blank face reads as different emotions
Soviet filmmaker Lev Kuleshov reportedly cut the same neutral close-up of an actor after shots like a bowl of soup or a child in a coffin, and audiences praised his hunger or grief. Surrounding shots change how we read a face. The original footage is lost, but modern replications find a similar effect.
