Verbal overshadowing · Why describing a face can make it harder to recognize

Describing a face in words can make it a bit harder to recognize later. Schooler and colleagues reported it in 1990, and a multi-lab replication in 2014 found the effect was real, though smaller than first claimed. Words can crowd out a memory that's hard to put into words.
