얼음은 왜 물에 동동 뜰까
얼음이 뜨는 이유
대부분의 물질은 굳으면 더 빽빽해지는데, 물은 얼면서 분자가 육각형 틀로 자리를 잡아 부피가 10%쯤 늘어나요. 그래서 얼음이 물보다 가벼워 떠요. 호수가 위에서부터 얼어서 물고기가 겨울을 날 수 있는 것도 이 덕분이에요.

Why ice floats · Why ice floats on water
Most substances get denser as they solidify, but water molecules lock into a hexagonal frame when freezing, expanding by about 10%. So ice is lighter than water and floats. It's also why lakes freeze from the top and fish survive winter.
