출퇴근에 쓰는 시간은 왜 늘 한 시간쯤일까

걸어 다니던 옛 마을이든 지하철이 다니는 대도시든 사람들은 하루 평균 한 시간쯤을 이동에 써 왔다는 관찰이에요. 교통이 빨라지면 같은 시간 안에 더 멀리 살게 돼서 도시가 커졌다는 설명이에요. 1994년 이탈리아 물리학자 체사레 마르케티가 정리해 이름이 붙었어요.

From walking villages to subway cities, people have spent about an hour a day getting around. When transport got faster, people moved farther away instead, and cities grew. Italian physicist Cesare Marchetti described it in 1994.
