Why bass fades at low volume · Why music sounds thin when you turn it down
Our ears are less sensitive to very low and very high sounds, and the gap widens at quiet levels. So turning the volume down makes the bass seem to vanish first. Fletcher and Munson's 1933 equal-loudness curves showed this, and the 'loudness' button on audio gear compensates.
